Out of the trillions of non-human animals who are used and killed each year by humans, from land and sea, a very small number are rescued from exploitation and live out their lives as much as possible according to their own interests. Morally, this is the right of every living being, but currently most are denied this; most are used for what humans want from them, and most are killed at the hands of humans. The very few who escape exploitation are cared for in sanctuaries, from tiny micro-sanctuaries in people's homes and gardens, to larger farmed-animal sanctuaries, where many species live side by side. One way in which vegans can help other animals is by offering them sanctuary in their homes and/or by supporting dedicated animal sanctuaries so that they are able to continue to care for the animals who live with them.
Country borders have no relevance in this community effort to support the safe havens set up for rescued animals and there are vegan animal sanctuaries all across the world that need support. That said, just as it can be helpful to have a particular, though not exclusive, focus on our own areas when engaging in vegan advocacy, it can also be helpful to raise awareness of local vegan animal sanctuaries. This blog gives some information on each of the animal sanctuaries we are aware of that are based in Scotland and are run by vegans / on a vegan basis, with no animal exploitation.
We are often asked about this and so we hope it's helpful to have a list with contact details and some general information on each sanctuary. Many of our vegan sanctuaries rely on donations. If you’re able to help by giving regular support that will be a huge help to them, as they will be able to rely on that amount coming in regularly which will help them to plan. If not, you may be able to make one-off donations / purchases from their Amazon wish lists. Or, you may have skills you can use in fundraising for them.
We are not at all suggesting that we should only support sanctuaries based in Scotland and many of us also support sanctuaries in other countries and we often share posts from sanctuaries based abroad on our social media.
TRIBE ANIMAL SANCTUARY SCOTLAND (TASS)
"We are a rescue animal sanctuary based in the Clyde Valley, Central Scotland. We are part of the Tribe Tattoo family.
Tribe Animal Sanctuary Scotland (TASS) is home to rescued Highland coos, pigs, sheep, donkeys, hens, turkeys, goats, dogs and cats. Most of our resident animals were originally destined for someone's dinner plate, but now they are safe and can live out their natural life with the dignity, respect and love they deserve.
Our mission is to highlight the cruel social construct that views some animals as 'food animals', -which makes it acceptable to treat them with contempt, cruelty and a complete absence of compassion- and 'pets', who are showered with love and affection and given the best of medical and other care.We treat all our animals as 'pets', and hope that people can see how fun, intelligent and individual each of our residents is.
Our work on social media concentrates on showing the animals in their environment, the hope is that if people get to know them, they will think twice about eating them. From the cute chirruping noises the turkeys make to the pigs enjoying a belly rub, from hens strutting around full of business to the coos enjoying a slice of toast, we want people to enjoy watching the animals as much as we do, to share the videos and to talk about them to meat eating friends and family, and who knows, maybe we can help someone on their journey to veganism.
We do have ‘meet and greet’ Sundays (1-3pm), where we have people over and we walk around spoiling the animals with treats and attention. If you’d like to join us, contact us through the Facebook page and let us know which Sunday you are interested in, and we can check availability. We do not charge for the meet and greet Sundays, but donations are always welcome.”

THE KARASS SANCTUARY FOR FARMED ANIMALS
“At The Karass Sanctuary for Farmed Animals near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway we provide a safe haven for farmed animals used in the human food system, most of whom would otherwise have died in slaughter houses. We care for 69 residents, including pigs, sheep, hens, cockerels in our bachelor flock, turkeys and
We believe that every one matters, that their reality is as real as ours, that their lives mean as much to them as ours do to us and that they are their own best advocates. People can come to visit the residents and get to know them individually and, with this knowledge about who they are, be able to make informed decisions about what relationship they want to have with the animals humans farm for food.
We welcome visitors and operate an open-door policy. Please call us on 01557 830170 to arrange your visit.”

WILLOWS ANIMAL SANCTUARY AND ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY UNIT
“Willows Animal Sanctuary is the largest, vegan run, equine, farm and domestic animal sanctuary in Scotland and will try to help any animal in distress. We have been a charity since 1999 and we look after over 500 animals including over 100 horses, ponies and donkeys, approximately 65 cats and dogs and many reptiles as well as over 200 farm animals and birds. Our emphasis is on letting visitors see animals living in as natural a state as possible and emphasising that Willows sees all animals as sentient beings deserving of our respect. Unlike larger charities we have no reserves of money and are always desperately short of funds. We specialise in helping elderly or more vulnerable animals that have already been refused help by well-known large national charities, but we can only continue to help needy animals with your support!"
ANANDA ANIMAL SANCTUARY
"We’re an animal sanctuary in the Clyde Valley in Scotland that rescue and provide forever homes to farm animals that have been mistreated, neglected or simply unwanted. We currently care for 40 animals including chickens, turkeys, sheep, goats, ducks, cats and a three legged dog. The word ‘Ananda’ means bliss in Sanskrit and this is exactly what we want to offer these beautiful beings – a safe and loving home where they can live out their lives with the respect and care they deserve.Ultimately we would love to see all animals saved from slaughter and through the sanctuary we hope to promote, educate and encourage compassionate vegan living for the benefit of animals, humans and the planet. Seeing these beautiful beings in a happy environment where they can develop their own individual personalities and express themselves will hopefully rebuild the way we have been conditioned to view farmed animals. They make us smile and laugh everyday and hopefully through social media everyone can get to know them all for the individuals they are. We aren’t open for visits yet as we are still relatively new and setting everything up but we hope to be able to welcome you all to Ananda soon!"
"Following us on Facebook and sharing posts is probably the best form of support we could ask for but if you would like to help out the sanctuary financially you can send us a donation via Paypal, bank transfer or purchase something off our Amazon wish list.

TINTO KENNELS RESCUE AND SANCTUARY
"I have rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed hundreds of animals over more than thirty years funded solely by the proceeds of running boarding kennels, and given permanent sanctuary to those who couldn't be rehomed for various reasons. At the moment there are 33 permanent residents -- horses, sheep, dogs, cats, parrot, ferrets, rabbits and poultry. COVID-19 means no one is going on holiday so no one needs boarding kennels and suddenly, out of the blue, the income and security for the animals has gone.
I always thought as long as I was prepared to work hard the animals were secure, but their security has just disappeared in a puff of smoke. I am in new territory here, asking for help. It doesn't come easily to me, but it's something else I've got to do for the animals. If you can donate to get us through this time please do.
Paypal is firstname.lastname@example.org
If you prefer to transfer directly through the bank please pm me for bank details."
THE MAGGIE FLEMMING ANIMAL HOSPICE
"At our Hospice near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway we give loving and comforting end-of-life care and friendship to abandoned terminally-ill companion animals and rescued farmed animals so that they don't have to take their final steps alone."
Please contact the sanctuaries directly for more information. :-)
